Tips

Thank you for joining the Headwater Hats movement, here are some tips for rockin’ your new hat band.

  • Willows are pliable when fresh cut or soaked in water but once they dry into the shape of your hat they will age and become somewhat brittle.

  • Often leaves are left on the willows when the hat band is first made. These leaves will dry on the band and eventually flake off over time. Just brush them off as you care to (as you will see in our gallery, fresh leaves, dried leaves, or no leaves all make for a good look). We like how these hat bands can change from day to day and month to month - just like the natural world.

  • While the hat bands should be made so as to be snug onto the hat, unless they band is sewn into place it will slide off if your hat is turned upside down. Sewing it into place, or pinning it, is the best option, or just be aware and keep it upright!

  • Whether you decorate the hat band further is entirely up to you. We think flowers, seed heads, feathers, and other natural adornments look great when tucked into the hat band. Keep in mind though that these can be delicate and may over time need to be “freshened up”. Unlike petroleum-based hat bands, ours may “shed” a little over your hat as flower petals dry or leaves fall off. Just brush them off, freshen them up, and wear them out with pride knowing you are rocking a natural style connected to a bigger story.

  • Don’t forget to tell people about the Headwater Hats story when they compliment your sweet hat and be sure to tag us on social media when you share your photos @headwaterhats
